Hail and Wind Damage, Handled Calmly

The National Weather Service counts April 28, 2012 among the area's historic hail storms. Two waves of storms rolled through that day, dropping baseball-size hail over St. Louis County and leaving hail damage in the County and the City of St. Louis alike.

Later reports were smaller. On May 26, 2024, the NWS logged 1-inch hail at Kirkwood, MO and Florissant, MO, and 2-inch hail just southwest of Webster Groves, MO. On May 16, 2025, 2-inch hail fell in University City, MO and around Chesterfield, MO, with none logged inside the City.

The Good Friday tornado of April 22, 2011 peaked at EF4 in Bridgeton and tore a large section of roof off the airport's Concourse C. The NWS counted about 2,700 structures damaged from Maryland Heights through Bridgeton, Berkeley, Ferguson and Florissant.

That same May 16, 2025, an EF3 tornado with 152 mph peak winds formed near Clayton and crossed Forest Park and the north City neighborhoods of Fountain Park, Kingsway and O'Fallon Park before reaching the river. The NWS says thousands of City buildings were damaged.

None of this means your roof was hit. Storms are simply common here: thunder rumbles on 40 to 50 days in a typical year, per the NWS.

Where Storm Damage Roof Work Fits

Look from the ground once the weather clears, never from a ladder.

  • Dings on metal parts. Gutters, vents and AC fins show hail first. Bruised shingles are much harder to see from the yard.
  • Lifted or missing tabs. Gusts break the seal so shingles fold back or tear away, most often at ridges and edges.
  • A limb on the roof. A heavy branch from an old street tree can crack the deck under shingles that still look whole. Keep clear of downed lines.
  • A new ceiling stain. Water runs along rafters, so the stain may sit well away from the opening.

If a claim pays, your insurer decides what the policy owes. These published rows (St. Louis 2024, Missouri 2026) give scale for reading an estimate; none is our price or a bid.

Inspection, Estimate, Install

  1. Stay safe. Keep off the roof, move things away from drips and photograph the damage with the storm date.
  2. Send us a request. We ask what you saw and book a visit. A local roofer does the inspection: photos, measurements and notes.
  3. Open your own claim. Contact your insurer yourself. Its adjuster reviews the damage, and the insurer decides coverage.
  4. Read the contract. An insurance-paid job must come with a bold cancellation notice and a tear-off cancellation form. Keep both.

Insurance, Adjusters and Paperwork

Your insurance company decides your claim. Your roofer's part is the evidence: photos of the damage and a written estimate. Missouri doesn't let a contractor bargain with your insurer for you or advertise that service. The one person who can act for you on a claim is a licensed public adjuster.

The deductible is yours to pay. A Missouri roofer can't offer to cover it, refund part of it, or sweeten the deal with a gift, coupon, credit or anything else of value.

Did your insurer deny some or all of the claim in writing? Then an insurance-paid roof contract can be canceled up to midnight of the fifth business day after that letter reaches you. Your money comes back within ten days, except for any emergency work you agreed to, like a tarp.

Separately, a purchase made at your front door generally carries three business days to cancel. Policy questions go to your insurer or the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance; see our Missouri roofing rules too.

What Sets This Apart

No deadlines, no pressure to sign, no cost to ask. Missouri has no state roofing license, so for a house in the City, ask the roofer for the City graduated business license, plus insurance papers, an itemized contract and references.

Quick Answers

Does hail always mean I need a new roof?

No. Small hail may mark gutters and leave shingles sound. Bigger stones can crack shingles or strip granules and shorten their life. The roofer can show you photos of what turned up, and your insurer settles what the policy covers.

Can a roofer handle my insurance claim for me?

No. A contractor in Missouri can't negotiate your claim or offer to. The roofer documents the damage and writes an estimate, and you work with your insurer directly. If you want a representative, hire a licensed public adjuster.

A roofer offered to cover my deductible. Is that allowed?

No. Missouri bars contractors from paying or rebating any of your deductible and from handing out gifts or credits. You pay the deductible yourself. If a roofer makes an offer like that, take it as a good reason to talk to someone else.

Can I get a tarp on before the claim is settled?

Yes. A tarp or similar emergency step to protect the house is common. Have the roofer bill it apart from the main job and keep the receipt for your insurer. Emergency work you agreed to can still be charged if you later cancel.
